From Nathan Coltrane, Director of Photography on the “Jack Fall” test shoots. “The purpose of these test shoots was for Brandon (the editor/colorist) and I to get an idea of how we wanted to approach the overall look of the film. I believe it’s important for the director, DP, the editor and the colorist to all be and the same page from day 1. I wanted to really give a look to this world that brought out the feel of a dry & desolate location. The location itself has a lot of browns and yellows so we decided to build our color palette off of those tones. The camera we used was a 5DMKII. I love working with the 5D. I think it’s a great camera and has a lot to offer for a low budget film. However, because of the nature of DSLR filmmaking you really have to plan ahead on how you’re going to shoot things. Generally when you shoot your raw footage, you want to give as much latitude as possible so we shot on a low saturation profile. Knowing that we eventually wanted push everything towards more of a “golden” look, I upped the white balance to 6300K vs something more along the lines of 5900K where it would typically be shot. This is important because with the compression that comes with DSLR cameras, you’re limited to how far you can push things in post... so you have to walk a fine line between shooting a flat/neutral profile, and shooting for a final look. For the most part, we shot on either a 35mm or 85mm lens, with a few mixtures of other lenses in there, but I really feel the 35 and 85 give great cinematic feels in their own perspective ways. The 35 is a great lens for giving a personal, “in the moment” feel. It really draws you into the scene and makes you feel like you’re right there. The 85 has kind of an opposite effect. The 85 is really great for drawing your attention in on details. Depending on how it’s used, you can also separate the audience from the subject or bring the audience right in on the subject. As far as technical specs, I almost always try to shoot at a 180 degree shutter angle. Because we were shooting at 23.97 frames per second, I set the shutter to 1/47 second. This is just another aspect you can use to your advantage on DSLR’s to draw out the cinematic look.” Featuring: KC Guyer Carl Hickerson Cecily Crow Amanda Vasconcellos Hannah L.
